Organizers of the Beauty of Books March 8th Reading campaign, an activity to promote reading among Chinese women, hosted a ceremony to recognize the winners of its fourth writing competition, and to recognize outstanding families and participating units. The ceremony was held on December 1, 2016, in Beijing. The ceremony also kicked off the campaign's fifth annual writing competition, and a series of events, with the theme "promoting family education and family traditions, boosting love for family and country."

China Red Flag Press, China Women's News and in November 2012 organized the first nationwide women's reading campaign.

In 2016, more than 10 million women and 25,000 units (including enterprises, trade unions and social institutions) participated in the campaign. Some 51,000 articles were submitted during the campaign's writing competition. Judges selected 760 well-written articles, and they selected 300 well-written family letters and 180 calligraphies or paintings.

Organizers also recognized 110 outstanding supporting units and 100 model book-loving families.

In 2016, the campaign's organizers held 20 public lectures, with such themes as "reading and family tradition" and "the development of women's spiritual world," in Beijing. Similar events were held in Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Zhejiang provinces.

Some 500 people, including winners of writing competitions and representatives of supporting units or book-loving families, attended. The ceremony was held in the headquarters of China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC).

Zhang Shiping, Deputy-Director of the Committee for Social and Legal Affairs of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Zhang Shengyou, former member of the Secretariat of China Writers Association, attended the ceremony.

Wang Hongqi, Director of the Center for Chinese Women's Cultural Studies of Capital Normal University, gave a speech. She encouraged women to spread love through reading and writing, and she said she hoped women would play significant roles in building happy and harmonious families.

Hu Yunrui, a representative of China Huaneng Group, one of the outstanding units, shared an experience of the group's women workers committee in promoting reading among women.

During the ceremony, some selected calligraphies and paintings were displayed, and two dramas, which told the stories of book-loving families, were staged.

Members of the Women Employees Committee of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions of Railway Workers read a proposal, in which they called on all women workers to participate in the reading campaign.

The campaign's organizing committee has been recruiting volunteers, known as "book angels." The volunteers' missions are promoting the campaign and organizing reading-related activities in local communities.

China Red Flag Press has established an online family library, where people can exchange their books and share their opinions about books they have read.

Two books, entitled Reading and Family Traditions and Reading and Family Education, have been published. The books will be major materials used in the campaign's activities in 2017.
