Sketchbook, whose name is Dong Yuqing, is an interior de sig ne r. His wife, Lily Lv, better known on-line as "MYnotebook," is an editor at a travel magazine. Both were born in Tangshan, in northern China's Hebei Province, in 1977, which was one year after the magnitude-7.8 earthquake ravaged their hometown.
Sketchbook and MYnotebook met in high school, where they became close friends who often spent their spare time together. After they graduated, Sketchbook studied architecture at a university in Shijiazhuang (capital of Hebei) while MYnotebook studied tourism management at a college in Tianjin.
The young couple wrote letters to stay in touch and, after a time, they felt they were growing even "closer" to each other. At that time, Sketchbook often included drawings in his letters. As she tells her story, MYnotebook explains how all of her roommates envied her for having such a talented and romantic male friend.
Sketchbook graduated from university in 1999 and soon found a job in Beijing. He visited MYnotebook in Tianjin on many weekends and he often took her and her roommates to the best dining hall on campus. MYnotebook was touched by his care and devotion and she eventually realized she was in love with Sketchbook. She moved to Beijing after she graduated and, in 2003, the couple got married.
MYnotebook says Sketchbook's simplicity is his most attractive character trait. "After we began dating, I often asked him to draw things I liked or I wanted. We used to buy clay and spend a whole day, in our apartment, making all kinds of little figures, animals and objects … We have kept all of our works. Since I'm a person who likes writing, I have persisted in keeping diaries," says MYnotebook.
"He likes to draw pictures as illustrations for my diaries. We have finished several diaries and we call the series 'Our Simple Life.' It is such a wonderful thing to be with a person, like Sketchbook, whom you find it's very easy and comfortable to get along with. We enjoy recording our daily chores in this simple, but interesting, way."
